The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics is redefining the way musculoskeletal care is delivered across the region with locations throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
As the weather warms up and spring arrives, many of us are eager to get back to outdoor activities like running, hiking, and sports. While staying active is great for your health, sudden increases in physical activity can sometimes lead to foot and ankle injuries. At The Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center, we see a rise in foot-related issues every spring, and we’re here to help you stay injury-free.
Common Spring Foot Injuries
Achilles Tendonitis: This is one of the most common spring injuries we treat. Achilles tendonitis occurs when the tendon connecting your calf muscles to your heel becomes inflamed, often due to overuse or sudden increases in activity. Symptoms include pain and stiffness along the back of the ankle, especially in the morning or after exercise.
Plantar Fasciitis: This condition causes heel pain due to inflammation of the plantar fascia, the thick band of tissue running along the bottom of your foot. Springtime activities like running or long walks can exacerbate this issue.
Ankle Sprains: Uneven outdoor terrain can lead to twists and turns that stretch or tear the ligaments in your ankle. Swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight are common symptoms.
Stress Fractures: Sudden high-impact activities can cause small cracks in the bones of your feet, leading to pain and swelling. This often happens when people ramp up their running mileage too quickly.
Metatarsalgia: Pain and inflammation in the ball of your foot can occur after long periods of running, jumping, or wearing unsupportive footwear.
