The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics is redefining the way musculoskeletal care is delivered across the region with locations throughout Maryland, DC, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
I shattered my ankle about 13 years ago and though I had surgery right away there wasn’t much of my ankle left to work with so the surgeon placed a lot of hardware in my ankle to connect my leg bones to my foot.
What did your pain or other symptoms prevent you from doing?
As time progressed my ankle became less flexible and less supportive so even simple walking became very difficult. I had pain all the time but especially in the past two years, it became debilitating.
Why did you choose Dr. Neufeld and Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center?
My sister is an orthopaedic surgical nurse in Denver and she was searching for a surgeon for me and after calling and talking to Dr. Neufeld’s PA suggested I call the practice for an appointment.
What procedure/treatment did you have done?
Total ankle replacement.
How did you feel after your treatment?
I woke up one morning about 6 days after my surgery and kept feeling there was something different about the day and then finally realized I was not in pain anymore. I had forgotten what it was like to not be in pain. Through my recovery I did not have to take any more oxy, just took extra strength Tylenol as I needed it and I don’t need it anymore.
Do you have any advice for other patients?
Follow the Doctor’s, PA’s and medical staff’s instructions. I did and was told more than a few times it was obvious I was doing what I was told and was NOT doing things I wasn’t supposed to and that was why my ankle healed so well. Also, be patient, the healing does take time. And take pain medication if you actually need it for real pain because you do not heal as well if you are in pain.
